History of Daraba
Daraba is a sweet that melts into your mouth. Its pure, delicious, and energy-boosting sweetness, is crafted by skilled artisans of Kundan Nirvadhi using a unique process. Remarkably, it remains fresh and edible for up to six months.
It's origin is traced back to the 17th century, during the reign of Nizamul Mulk of the Nizam Dynasty, adding an intriguing layer to its history. They were making a Parkola Wall of 9kms, to protect the city from the Maratha empire. They made this deliciously nutritious sweet called Daraba to keep the workers healthy and strong. Since then Daraba has become an integral part of Burhanpur’s food palate.
A 400-year-old temple dedicated to Lord Balaji Maharaj is a spiritual landmark in Burhanpur. Each year, a Grand Mela is held at Satiara Ghat on the Tapti River, where Lord Balaji graces the city’s residents with his presence on a chariot for nine days. All the devotees and locals cherish this sweet during the mela. Daraba has become a cherished part of Burhanpur's culinary heritage.
